“…the fundamental measure of competitiveness is quality jobs. It is jobs that to a considerable degree define the quality of life of a nation’s individual citizens.”
Rising above the Gathering Storm
High unemployment, a low rate of personal income growth, and cutbacks in financial support for education are challenging Michigan families and families across the country. These obstacles are manifest especially as they aim to support their students’ pursuits of higher education and better job opportunities. These challenges affect students regardless of race or gender. At the same time, this nation faces increasing demands for educated, technological talent.

In the book Rising above the Gathering Storm, Revisited: Rapidly Approaching Category 5, the authors state:
“If Americans are to compete for quality jobs in such a world-one where three billion new would-be capitalists entered the job market upon the restructuring of many of the world’s political systems late in the last century-they will need help from their government … at all levels … as well as from themselves. The latter includes preparing for the growing educational demands of quality jobs and continuing to maintain their skills in a circumstance where the half-life of new technical knowledge may be measured in terms of a few years or, in some cases, even a few months.”
We also know that the job market is demanding a talent pool increasingly diverse across many dimensions to yield workforces that produce innovative solutions to complex problems.
